This bilingual book is a literary bridge between two worlds: the French musician and journalist Ulysse Manes, and the Artsakh writer Hermine Avagyan. Through Hermine’s poetic voice, she guides Ulysse along the hidden paths of her lost homeland—where childhood memories and the scents of her village blend with
the fog of war.
“A war-damaged car roof turned into a table, with bread on it. On one hand, the symbolism is simple—almost banal. Bread, a symbol of life and well-being, contrasts with the damaged surface as a symbol of disaster, risking to devalue the idea. However, the installation is a physical object that must be experienced. Sitting at this table means physically entering a war zone, even if only conditionally.”

This idea haunted me during the blockade of Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) —
12 December 2022 to 30 September 2023 — when, beyond the horror of war, there was also the struggle to survive: no food, sometimes only bread. I felt the need to raise this issue, yet my conscience would not let me return to art while others might not even have bread to eat.
After three years, I finally have the chance to realise this idea as a book cover.
